Description
She was determined to get the boys on board. She pushed both of them into the carriage, a stinking hellhole of sweating bodies and wailing children. She knew that they were small and agile enough to find a gap to cram into. But before she could find a way to board, the locomotive began moving, hissing great clouds of steam accompanied by strenuous huffing and puffing.
The train’s impending departure drew a scream of dismay from those who had not been able to board. It was the last train that would ever leave from Sialkot for the Indian side. The sardarni reached out for the handlebar as she ran alongside the iron monster. She managed to touch it. But it was too late. The platform had ended and the train had picked up speed.
‘No!’ she screamed in mental anguish. Tears flowed down her cheeks as she realized that the children were on a train to Amritsar without her. She fainted on the platform as it dawned on her that she had nothing left to live for.
