Description

I had pulled over onto the shoulder of Salome Highway on my way back from the Harquahala Valley and I walked a little way into the desert to get a better shot of Saddle Mountain. As I walked away from the highway I realized how rugged the desert floor was. Sharp rocks of volcanic origin were exposed and the floor was littered with scree. I kept my eyes open for any possible critters, such as rattle snakes, and kept thinking how rough this terrain is on tires. These rocks can really do some damage to tires and sharp cactus spines caused us many flat tires because of the 2-ply sidewalls. Suddenly something caught my eye. Something red, and at first I thought it was trash thrown from a car, but I was too far away from the road. I took a closer look and what caught my were the red buds of a tiny cactus.
