Description

A National Historic Landmark, San Xavier was founded as a Catholic Mission in 1692. Construction of the present church began in 1783 and was completed in 1797. The oldest intact European structure in Arizona the church's interior is filled with marvelous original statuary and mural paintings. It is a place where visitors can step back in time and enter an authentic 18th century space. Thanks for stopping by.

A stunning image, Bob. The light is superb giving the mission the appearance of a sand castle.

One doesn't have to be a religious person, to appreciate or 'kinda' fall in love with this amazing structure, WOW ! what a sight Bob, - a mix of two totally different styles of architectural design ! - I could be wrong and know a little of past eras, [still learning] but I am hooked and it leaves me speechless - such beautiful visions... the centerpiece so ornate, compared to the main structure, but both complement each other well... it also makes me wonder, if they are renovating or adding another tower to the right side ? the left looks, as if it had already been completed ? maybe it's a WIP ?

This would be worth a visit [in my books] especially with the late afternoon sun giving this image the brilliance of your photography, thanks for sharing it.

Fantastic capture of 'The White Dove of the Desert', San Xavier del Bac Bob. Your lighting is perfect. About 20-30 years ago or so, the interior was renovated and they went to Italy, or Spain, to get the European craftsmen to do the job!It is surprisingly small on the inside. It was founded by Padre Eusebio Kino and this was the furthest North the Spanish influence extended in Arizona.
