Description

This is the cabin of the Ford Tri-Motor. There are eleven seats, the cabin is wood paneled, each seat has an individual light and ventilation, and all windows have curtains. Each seat is both a window and an aisle seat. In the rear of the cabin is a lavatory. The crew consisted of a pilot, co-pilot and a flight attendant. The Ford Tri-Motor 5-AT-B, Serial Number 8, was delivered to its first owner, Transcontinental .Air Transport (ATA) on January 18, 1929. It was named the 'City of Wichita' and used to introduce the first coast-to-coast passenger air/rail service in the United States on July 7, 1929. While advertised as a transcontinental service, the airline had to rely on rail connections with a deluxe Pullman train from New York City to Port Columbus, Ohio. From there a Tri-Motor provided a hop across the continent to Waynoka, Oklahoma. From Waynoka, Oklahoma another train would take the passengers to Clovis, New Mexico and another Tri-Motor would fly the final part of the journey to the Grand Canyon Air Terminal in Glendale, California, a few miles northeast of Los Angeles. This demanding trip would be available only for a year before Transcontinental was merged with Western Air Service. This picture was taken on 25 March, 2017, Sig...

I'm ready to take my seat! Interesting way to combine air and train travel. I wonder what a transcontinental ticket would cost back then.

@Buffalo1: I don't know. But took a ride, the coast $75. Total time about 1/2 hr, the actual flying time about 15 minutes. On a transcontinental flight this must have been mind-numbing.

We got to see the inside of what Bill tells me was a Boeing 247 from 1933 that had those things in the aisle that you had to step over. (Wing spars?) It seems like you had to make a much higher step, though. It's at the Boeing museum at the King County airport now, but when we saw it, it was still at the restoration center. We were the only ones there, and I guess the docent was bored, because he let us on the plane. It was pretty fun!
