Description

This is a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z 28. This particular car has a 460 ci engine with 800 hp, 1000 hp when using nitrous. It has side pipes, a full roll cage, and wheelie bars. The rear tires are 21 inches wide, and it is street legal here in Arizona. Going to the Scottdale Pavillion on Saturday night, where every weekend people bring their cars and display them, all sort of categories, socialize and listen to oldies, is an once or twice monthly event. Usually, my buddy a Force Recon Marine veteran with 30 years of service, who has a 1967 Chevy Nova with a 418 ci motor, generating 580 hp and his buddy, an Air Force veteran with the Camaro Z 28, usually trailer their cars here because they can't make the 80 mile round-trip on a tank of gas. While my buddy shows his car and meets like-wise oriented old-timers, mostly veterans, his wife is going to the nearby Talking Stick Casino to gamble. This set-up works out fine for both of them. When the wife is ready to go home, she calls, he picks up a hamburger, puts his car in the trailer, drives the mile or so to the casino, picks her up and they go home. If his buddy is there he follows suit and does the same. On this particular evening, after the wife called, my buddy suggested 'why don't we drive over there?'. Everybody knew what that meant, a chance to make some noise and race. Bear in mind he just turned 72. So my buddy drove alone, and I rode with his buddy, in the Z 28. Of course every chance they had they stepped on it, from the first traffic light to under the Pima Freeway bridge, only for a second or two each time, but it was fun. When we got to the portico of the casino, we got many looks, most of them dirty, because even just idling these things make a racket. My buddy's wife wasn't pleased, and the first thing she told him was 'no drag racing', and since his favorite saying is 'a happy wife is a happy life', he complied. Well, that didn't apply to his buddy, and once we were back on the Talking Stick Way/E Indian Bend Wash Rd.he stepped on it and accelerated into 3rd gear, when way ahead of us somebody made a left turn, luckily he saw us coming and stepped on it to get out of the way. We were slowing down, but I don't think we would have been able to stop completely. How fast were we going? I have no idea, it could have been 80, 90 or over 100 mph. I didn't look at the speedometer, nor did I continue to record this ride on my phone, but I brazed myself for impact. That was the most thrill I had in a long time.
