Description

Taken from the road on our way to the SF Bay Area a couple of weeks ago. This small butte is dwarfed by Mt. Shasta, which is right nearby (& which I will post a photo of next). Some geological information (which I know Tara & Bill will appreciate): Black Butte is a cluster of overlapping dacite lava domes in a butte, a parasitic satellite cone of Mount Shasta. It is located directly adjacent to Interstate 5 at milepost 742 between the city of Mount Shasta and Weed, California. The highway crosses a 3,912 ft (1,192 m) pass, Black Butte Summit, at the western base of the lava domes. The lava domes were extruded at the foot of the cone of Shastina following the period of its major eruptions about 9,000–10,000 years ago. Please zoom.

Getting so close to a volcano gives me the creeps, even if long dormant. The idea of the ground opening and hot stuff coming out, burning everything in its path - OUCH! It's enough to be burned a wee bit on the stove - how THAT hurts. But seeing these domes at a distance, - beautiful. Keep up the good work! :-)

Cool information! Thanks! :) I read it to Bill, and we were both fascinated by the idea of a parasitic satellite cone. So interesting!
