Description

We all have been suggesting memories of past times. Often the feeling of having lost theirs forever becomes anxiety, in some cases depression, as if we were attacked by monsters of the unconscious. But time is something indefinite that we can not understand, in fact only the fugitive instant present exists, you have to live it now and immediately, the future is surprising the past must no longer be afraid.

You portray the 'persistence of memory' powerfully: The faces show many expressions, and they hover over the man on the ground...and they haunt him. The faces seem to speak and sing and wail. I love the shadows in their eyes and mouths: They open their mouths, and we see darkness. Pure darkness. They speak from an unredeemable past.

And their faces are 'layered'---they're packed on top of each other, row after row. We think that these faces continue, row after row, well beyond the top of the image...

Your grays communicate the "haze" of memory. Yet you have very strong light on all the faces---and on the man on the ground, too. Your image is lit with the light of mid day...and yet it feels like ghosts wailing in the night. Amazing contrasts.

And you have the numbers of a clock on the ground. With no 'hands': It's time without time. The clock is where the man is, where we are: on the ground. But the faces above have no time: They're timeless. I've often thought that memory speaks to us like faces hidden in walls. The faces could be centuries old. They speak from a deep, mysterious past.

And the man on the ground looks down---not at the faces---and he contemplates. Lost in thought. At the same time, his memories loom above him like gigantic statues. Like mountains. It shows how our tiny human 'frames' contain vast landscapes and cosmic galaxies inside. We're small, but we imagine the whole universe...

The image feels slightly mournful, reaching for something out-of-reach. And the faces seem to yearn...But it's so human, and it's brilliantly conceived, Giuliano. And articulated. It's always a great pleasure to come here and sit with your work...I wish you a good spring.

As the Buddha was supposed to have said: Do not tarry over the past. It is gone. And do not tarry over the future either. It is yet to come. Instead live in the present.

Of course, so many of us are so preoccupied with the past and the future that we miss the present entirely, and therefore in a way cease to live. We become petrified -- like all the figures in this render. Yet another thought-provoking work! 👍

I once posted an image of the two Greek masks of Tragedy and Comedy with a reference to a theater in Broward county. A flamer came at me asking why there was a picture with a downcast mouth. ????!!! Because angel dust and pixie dust are not dance wax cast off a Diva's shoes!
