Description
Back in the day, model railroading was quite the challenge, often being confined to a 4’x 8’ piece of plywood in one’s basement. It was always a Herculean effort trying to fit as much as possible onto such a small area. In the Fifties, as a kid, I started with the somewhat large S-gauge. Later, in my teen years, I made the switch to smaller HO scale, still struggling to squeeze one last bit of track, rolling stock, or paper mâché scenery into such a hopelessly limited space. And pity poor Mom, watching her white, powdered laundry detergent steadily disappearing from the Tide box only to end up as ersatz snow all over the train tracks and terrain!
Now, in the age of virtual digital space, the sky’s the limit. So, here it is, as much vintage diesel power and rolling stock that could be shoe-horned into a much more sprawling expanse. And yet, still not enough room!
As usual, all models are Bryce5 or Wings3d originals with post work in PSP8. This is actually a composite image of four separate renders, one for the foreground yard, the second for the elevated stock, the third for the background yard, and the last the mountains in the distance. Each file was about 150 megs. A 600-meg single file would have crashed my piddly little WinXP desktop. As an added note of possible interest, some of the box car textures, uv-mapped onto the mesh, are actual photos taken of my ancient S-gauge cars from THE FIFTIES!

WOW! Great job with this. I, too, have HO scale trains. But, in a small apartment most is packed down. I have a 5 shelf home made book case with my favorites on display. I once considered doing a computer layout like you have here, but, as you say, even in cyberspace there's too little room! Keep up the good work! :-)

Terrific! Brings back a lot of memories and a hankering to unpack all those N-gauge rolling stock and rail for another go at it.

I thought the moment I saw the thumbnail that's a model train scene, not a full scale one. You caught the feel of this superbly, absolute great work. Yes, in the fifties I also had my first model scene in H0, stationary about 2 m (7 ft) x 1.5 m (5 ft) with mountains, tunnels and station. Only the memory remains.
