Description

Skyline of Washington, D.C. Took this wide view of the skyline of Washington, D.C. while standing on high ground in Arlington National Cemetery. "In 1910, the 61st United States Congress enacted a new law which raised the overall building height limit to 130 feet (40m), but restricted building heights to the width of the adjacent street or avenue plus 20 feet (6.1m); thus the building facing a 90-foot (27m)-wide street could be only 110 feet (34m) tall." Height restrictions were originally emplaced so that firefighting equipment would not be overmatched. And the good news for tourists like us is this preserved the "light and airy" character of Washington that Thomas Jefferson envisioned. A few landmarks: The wide roadway in the left third of the photo from Arlington, across the Potomac River into the city is Monument Avenue. The large, white, columned monument at the end of this road is the Lincoln Memorial. The Washington Monument is just to the right of center followed by the domed capitol and the Library of Congress. The one other taller building that shows just left of center is the Old Post Office, built between 1892 to 1899. Blue skies deserted us on this day. Seen from this perspective Washington looks like a huge park. Thanks for the description or I would have been totally disoriented. Very nice view of the city. And that rule concerning height - very good! Makes for a more beautiful city. Keep up the good work. And the overcast sky actually enhances the photo. No stark contrasts! :-)

A beautiful view similar to the one from the Marine memorial. The Old Post Office building is now a Trump hotel. Too bad.

I was going to ask you where I was when you took this shot, but I think it's probably the view from the Lee house. Terrific view!

This photo just sings, Bill - despite the overcast conditions. The mood is rather fitting for the times, somehow... Interesting factiod about the building height. Never knew that.. Looks like a lot of construction going on by all the cranes in the background.
