Description

Cap Diamant ("Cape Diamond") is the official name of the cape and promontory on which Quebec City is located, formed by the confluence of a bend in the St. Lawrence River to the south and east, and the much smaller St. Charles River to the north. It is part of a larger plateau named the Promontory of Quebec. Jacques Cartier, the French explorer who found glittering stones in the high cliff, thought the stones contained diamonds. After he brought samples of these stones back in France in 1542, experts concluded that these "diamonds" were actually quartz. __________________________________________________________ Le cap Diamant est le nom de l'extrémité orientale de la colline de Québec sur laquelle est située la citadelle de Québec. Ce nom a été donné par dérision, car les premiers explorateurs du Québec croyaient y avoir trouvé des diamants. C'est Jacques Cartier, l'explorateur français qui, trouvant des pierres scintillantes dans la haute falaise, émit l'hypothèse que ces pierres comportaient des diamants. Après qu'il eut apporté en France des échantillons, en 1542, les experts conclurent que ces « diamants » n'étaient en réalité que du quartz.
