Description

I decided to change this one into monochrome because I think it looks a lot better than the original colour photo.

Yes, the monochrome adds to this image. I find the construction holding up the roof fascinating. I also wonder what the organ sounds like - it looks very big! What church is this? :-)

Reply to T.Rex: It's the United church (a merger of the United Reform and the Methodist churches) in Winchester Hampshire, the town where I live. Until the mid-1980s it used to be very gloomy because it was extremely high and it was also dark-panelled. Then the church authorities ripped out all the wooden pews, installed a new floor halfway up the walls and painted all the walls and the pillars white so it's lovely and light now. There's a coffee bar in the entrance foyer under the church (which I go into a lot because it's cheap and cheerful!) and they have a lot of local groups using the church hall at the back every day. If you google it, you'll see a photo on their website (under "church history") of what it used to look like and if you dig around a bit more in Google you'll find out about its very interesting shared history with the old gaolhouse next door (which is now a pub!). The organ isn't used all that much, but I've heard it played a few times and it's got an imposing sound.
