Description

where I was at had low clouds over the area blocking the sun. at the next crest sunlight land can be seen. I wanted to show the clouds hanging over San Francisco Peaks. I am thinking the ones on top are Lenticular clouds (Altocumulus lenticularis) Sacred Mountains Once the fiery center of one of Arizona's most explosive volcanoes, the summits surrounding the now dormant inner core stand guard, protecting land that the native people of Arizona consider to be so sacred it is where earth meets heaven. The Navajo consider them to be the most sacred in all the West and their medicine men use the herbs collected from the mountaintop in healing ceremonies. They view the rising peaks as a holy landmark directing others to this sacred place. The Hopi believe the Kachina spirits live at the top of the mountain, gracefully moving through the clouds from summit to summit. The Kachinas are honored and revered here, in hopes that they will bless the crops below with a quiet rain that will ensure strong growth and healthy lives. The Zuni, Havasupai and Yavapai-Apache also consider these graceful remnants of the volcanic highlands to be sacred and return regularly to pray and honor the spirits that dwell there. http://www.arizona-leisure.com/san-francisco-peaks.html

Thanks for the text describing some of the Indian beliefs. I recall 1966, traveling the Santa Fe railroad towards Los Angeles. An elderly man who looked like the farmer in the dell got on at a "no place" and was to be dropped off at Flagstaff. MAN, was he ever interesting - worked his whole life on the Santa Fe. He was on his way to an over night place in Flagstaff. He told how to know where you are without having to look outside due to how the train rode the track. Uphill all the way to Flagstaff, then downhill to the mountains just east of LA. And did he have some interesting things to say about these mountains and the Indian's beliefs. I wish people with such knowledge could write it down so it doesn't go lost! Thanks for the post! :-)

Fantastic and breathtaking view you've captured here, Richard. The native peoples had such reverence for the earth... We need to follow their example.

Great shot Richard. Westbound between Winslow and Flagstaff. This area can experiences very high winds. The San Francisco Peaks are only one of several other mountains that are considered sacred. One other mountain comes to mind, Navajo Peak, within the Navajo Reservation but across the border in Southern Utah. A few years ago the operator of the Snow Bowl, the ski resort on the San Francisco Peaks lobbied the government to supplement the natural snowfall with snow made from treated waste water to extend the ski season, against the wishes of the Navajo and other Native tribes who consider these mountains sacred, but as usual, greed won out. The lobbying was strongly supported by the tourist industry in Flagstaff.

Super amazing view and fascinating information.

Very exciting to know the variety of Native Tribes think of this in similar ways.

Very sad to hear the newsy comment that jung1 wrote.

Wouldn't want to hear what I have to say of the horrific greed of the tourist industry.

Happens all over the world..
