Description
On this day, 75 years ago, naval forces of the United States of America and the Empire of Japan fought one of the most significant battles in history, near the island of Midway. As the sun rose on June 4, 1942, the Japanese were on the verge of winning the Pacific war. By the time it set, they had effectively lost it, although the fighting would drag on for another three years.
In this picture, Lt. Richard Best and ACRM James Murray of bombing squadron VB-6 are starting their bomb run against the Japanese carrier Akagi, flying a Douglas SBD-3 dive bomber off of the USS Enterprise (CV-6). They will score a direct hit, starting a fire that will burn out of control and result in the Akagi being abandoned early the next morning. Near the top of the picture can be seen another Dauntless crewed by Lt. (jg) Edwin Kroeger and RM3c Gail Halterman, who have just scored a near miss on the carrier. Later in the day, Best and Murray will successfully attack another carrier, the IJN Hiryu.
This picture was as much fun to research as it was to create. To produce the image, I had to alter the textures of the ship and both planes. For the ocean, I used the water plane from the fantastic Terra Dome 3 from DAZ. And then I fired up Photoshop Elements to turn the render into something reminiscent of a wartime photo.
I hope you'll all enjoy this tribute to the men who beat the odds that day, and thereby changed the course of the Second World War.

In reality there where no aircraft on decks of the Japanese flattops. All arming and fueling was done in the hangar. And there the aircraft where waiting on the return of the strikeforce that attacked Midway. It's a common mistake, because it has always been told that way and shown (cf the movie Midway). But very nice render, realy well done.

Terrific POV in this dramatic scene, a superbly rendered, high contrast concept. So real looking that it makes me dizzy just looking down at the action. Living in Los Angeles, I was around then, virtually on the front lines, and remember that do or die encounter well. Our torpedo bombers met with disaster so it was up to the Dauntless dive bombers to accomplish the vital task.

Thank you for your work, and for the stirring words you wrote to accompany it. With D-Day just two days away (at least on our memorial calendar), it's easy to overlook Midway. Thanks to you, it will be a long time before I do that again.

Great camera angle!

Great historical render, nicely done ! :) The Japanese ships and submarines are interesting to see, because they had a very different design, compared to other countries's ships. I think they even made a kind of sub-marine (small) air-carrier Oo.
