Description

June 26, 2017 More arms and fighting. These three men are going to demonstrate some of the arms used in battle and how they were used. The man to the right is describing each weapon and dress for combat. Here he is describing the beige padded tunic he is wearing. The thick padding is sewn in vertically. This proved to be very resistant to slashing (sword) and choping (axe), but poor when it comes to stabbing or penetrating weapons like spears or arrows. The fellow in the middle is wearing an early English helmet. This pattern survived to World War II! He is also wearing the padded tunik. The fellow to the left is wearing a chain mail tunik. The silver object on the ground is a helmet with shoulder protection of fish scale plates. Enjoy!

I had to relearn how it all developed from bronze to iron to full plate and needing a derrick to mount a horse. The heat of the desert and Crusades had little expression in English armor as only a minimum went there with some stopping at Sicily and others hanging up in Switzerland. Tell me all about it. Is it all in the neck or all in the wrists?

A derrick to mount a horse? These guys were strong enough to mount a horse the normal way. The derrick is a story made up by ivory tower academics who have neither seen nor tried mounting a horse in full armor. Unfortunately stories like this take on a life of their own and don't die out. Check my photos of the tournament. A lot of armor, and no derricks!

It's like I'm there with you watching the event. Great series of photos, and the history to go along with them.
