Description

This post takes you back to the Gettysburg Battlefield of July 1-3, 1863. The view above is from the military crest of the strategic hill known as "Little Roundtop". You are looking north along Cemetery Ridge towards the town of Gettysburg. The granite boulders provided the defending Union troops with some cover and concealment but they could not dig-in due to all the rock under a very thin covering of soil. The statue standing on the rock to the right is of Brigadier General Gouverneur Warren. He was the Union Army Engineer who just happened to discover this hill unoccupied shortly before Confederate forces stormed up the front and southern flank. His discovery and quick action caused units from New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Maine to take up hasty defensive positions on top of "Little Roundtop" literally minutes before the Confederate attack began. His decisive orders and the gallantry of the soldiers involved saved the day and was a major reason for the Union victory at Gettysburg. Now, you were there:-) ZOOM worthy. Yes, I like military history, but the scenery in this part of south-eastern Pennsylvania always knocks me out.

Who says engineers are not men of action. An impressive shot showing the Union view of the battlefield. Somewhere down there are Pickett and his boys.

So that's what Little Round Top and Cemetery Crest look like! Whoever tries to attack up that stony ridge is not smart - those boulders make a great fortification. Thanks for the post! Very enlightening! Keep up the good work. :-)

A shame that such a beautiful place is the scene of a battle, but I suppose this is true the world over.

What a stunning view, and a great photo, Bill! That would certainly be a commanding position for the defending Union troops. And a major disadvantage for the Confederates.

Your composition is picture perfect, with the high horizon and that fabulous diagonal line formed by the massive rocks of Little Roundtop.
