Description
The base of a large fallen redwood tree in Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park. There are several of these throughout the park. We stopped here on our way to Bandon this past weekend - it's located just south of the Oregon-California border & minutes from the coast...

Sad to lose such an old giant, but that's nature.

very lush forest scene. in Trees of Mystery there was a redwood growing on top of a fallen redwood. it was 30'0" in diameter. they cut it down because of being a safety hazard

A bit over sharpened for my old eyes, but a very satisfying composition.

Nice mid contrast light and dark forest effects in this shot.

Beautiful Forest shot.

Those shallow roots are a clue! Excellent capture of the ill fated giant!

Redwood roots are very shallow for such tall trees, usually only 5 or 6 feet deep. But they can extend outwards for 100 feet & intertwine with the roots of other nearby trees to provide stability.

Rain, soft ground and high winds keep things moving. This is quite a sight to see.
