Description

Taken a week ago at a local nature reserve. The floating pontoons are positioned to try and encourage terns to nest. There is a number of these "turtles" as a result of discarded pets, somehow surviving to grow quite large. They haul out to warm in the sun. I didn't consider the impact such non-native releases could have. This week I have been told the turtle has killed and eaten 2 newly hatched tern chicks!

Yes, turtles can be carniverous. I had painted turtles as a child. They didn't like dried ants eggs, but we discovered they LOVED raw (!) chicken liver! And raw tomato. Interesting photo. I would almost expect the terns to be aggressive, pecking at the turtles head. Surprise! And,yes, people messing with nature. Sigh. Who could have known? And the 6 foot alligator in the New York sewer system in the late 1950s? That was the wrong use of a toilet and a cruel thing to do to a "pet". But it got a nice place at the zoo. :-)

Great Scott! I had no idea. I had a pair of small Red Eared sliders years ago, Called George and Mary. Mary got a cancer and George died of a broken heart so the vet said. They were still much too small to eat chicks, but they did like a nice helping of raw mince.
