Description

This is a partial view of a commissioned carving of what would be called in the Pacific Northwest a totem pole. This piece is about 40 feet long and is made from at least two tree trunks. A seam, where the two pieces a fitted together, can be seen. This carving is done by students in a school that accepts selected students to a three year program to learn the traditional Maori cultural carvings and weaving. Finished products are sold at the adjacent store and are guaranteed to have been hand-carved by Maori using traditional woods. Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand. It has been known, that tourists from certain countries, Korea and China were named, buy Maori carvings and take them back to their own countries where they mass- produce cheap duplicates and flood global markets. This picture was taken on 8 June 2017, Sig..

Wonderfully intricate carving & it's interesting to see it in it's raw, partially completed form, with wood chips & shavings scattered across it. I saw lots of beautiful wood carvings by natives of the Pacific Northwest at the Museum of Anthropology on the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia a few years ago & a much smaller collection at the Portland Art Museum a few weeks ago...
