'Lt. Spencer Westmacott was one of our first men to land on Gallipoli on April 25th. He scrambled up a ridge and led us to a hill called Baby 700, shouting 'Good boys! Good lads!' At Baby 700, he reinforced the Australian line, but his right arm was smashed by a bullet while holding off a Turkish attack. He was stretchered to the beach and evacuated that night.' Those are the words that are posted at his display at the Gallipoli exhibit of the Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand. This museum is located on Wellington's waterfront and admission is free. The 'Gallipoli' exhibit chronicles New Zealand's involvement in the Battle of Gallipoli in World War I, where the Allies launched a naval attack on Gallipoli attempting to capture Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire's capital, and establishing a sea route to the Russian Empire, one of the Allies. Gallipoli is a peninsula located between the Gulf of Saros and the Dardanelles, which provides access to the Black Sea. As part of the British Empires contingent, colonial and ANZAC forces participated in this battle which started on 25 April 1915 and ended unsuccessfully on 9 January 1916.
