Description

The Maori were the first humans to arrive in New Zealand around 1100-1200 AD. They are of Polynesian origins and much of their culture is similar to what can be found in Samoa, Hawaii, French Polynesia etc. Songs sound Hawaiian but their lifestyle is adopted to a colder climate. The Maori are fully integrated into society, there are no longer any full-blooded Maoris, but most New Zealander have some Maori blood. There is a real effort to preserve and uphold the Maori culture. We were privileged to attend a Maori performance and were exposed to their way of life. various dances, foods etc. One dance, the 'Haka', is a war dance performed by the warriors before they go into battle. It was intended to psyche themselves up and intimidate the enemy. This dance is scary, watching the warriors perform various poses with their clubs, hollow and grunt, and their ability to almost pop their eyes out of their socket and stick their tongues out to the tip of their chins. Despite the fact that we knew it was only a performance for us, it nevertheless scared the hell out of me.I recorded some of this with my eye phone, but unfortunately I can't upload it. This picture was taken on 7 June 2017, Sig..

Nice explanation. The famous rugby team from New Zealand (named All Blacks) always performs a Haka before the encounter. Great image but it seems to me that the upload has rotated it :-)

You are right. When we were there the British National team ( I think they call them the Lions) was touring the country. They were playing the All Blacks the day we were in Dunedin and the All Blacks won 23-22. Some of the players of the All Blacks actually come from Rotorua where 40 percent of the population is Maori.

I can imagine the Haka would be impressive; that guy looks a little scary just standing still.

The thing that scared me the most were the eyes and the tongue, The tattoo pattern on the face and body didn't help either. The 'All Blacks' have no tattoos, or very few, and the spectators are too far away to see the eyes and that long tongue. Nevertheless they look impressive![
