Description
Captured back on 5/26/2011, at the Ray Touchpool section of the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific in beautiful Long Beach, California.
The Touchpool covers a wide area with several animals and consists of a low level of water atop a bed of sand.
As explained in the visitor's guide: bat rays have a barb near the base of their tails that is used solely as means of self-defense. These animals are extremely docile and pose little or no danger. But as a precaution, the spines on the rays are gently clipped while in the touchpool. The process is completely painless. They are clipped about every three months. As for touching the animals, that should be done using two fingers only. Do not grab and do not scratch.
To me, viewing this creature always evokes thoughts of Batman.

Nice close-up. They are docile, but, as you say, have a good defense. Keep up the good work. Love to see more photos from the Touch Pool. :-)
