Description
Taken at this years Flying Legends (2017), before you are some of the most famous Racing Aircraft ever.
Front and center is Alex Henshaws original Percival Type E Mew Gull, flown in from the Shuttleworth Collection. It has been described as 'The holy Grail of British Air Racing', aside from winning several minor tropheys in the U.K. it is known and famous for its win of the Kings Cup, where this and onther took 1st and 2nd at over 230mph. Henshaw then broke the England to Cape Town and back record in 1939. 6.377 miles in 39 hours 25 mins, in this cockpit! During all Henshaws racing and records the aircraft never broke down or was damaged.
Behind is the LeVier Cosmic Wind. Only three were built, designed by Lockheed staff it was never raced in the U.S. but won a Premier Open race in the U.K. The Kings Cup of 1964.There is one in the museum at Oshkosh.
Behind that is the famous shape of de Havilland DH88 Comet Racer 'Grosvenor House'. Winner of the England to Melbourne race. 11.300 miles. Built solely to race, fixed propellers and engines of very high power with open exhorts. The only blip during the race was a slight lose of power in one engine during one leg.
Behind that stands the Travel Air Type R 'Mystery Ship'. I'll post a shot soon.
It should be noted that the Gull and Comet rarely leave Shuttleworth.

Cool photo of the "business end" of these planes. Very interesting histories of these racing planes. I read the history of the Spitfire. It took a good deal from these racing planes. Were thee only racers at this show? I see a yellow and blue tail wagging in the background! Keep up the good work! :-)

The competitors to commercial airliners and the bombers to come. Not mere house boys. I really like this era. Eventually they spawned the round the world Voyager.
