Description

Lake Tarawera, is named after the Volcano Tarawera (visible in the distance) and is located near Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand. In the mid 1850s rowers would take visitors from the Maori village of Te Wairoa on the shores of nearby Lake Tarawera across this lake to the Pink and White Terraces of Lake Rotamahana. These two large and beautiful terraces of multilevelled pools were formed by silica deposits from thermal waters that had trickled over them for centuries and were a popular tourist attraction. Previous to the 1886 eruption Mt. Tarawera had not erupted in over 500 years. On 10 June 1886 there were earthquakes and loud sounds, and the erupting Mt. Tarawera lit up the sky with exploding fireballs from three vents. By the time the eruption finished five hours later, over 1,500 sq km had been buried in ash, lava, and mud. The Maori villages of Te Wairoa, Te Ariki and Moura were obliterated, 153 people were killed, the Pink and White Terraces were destroyed and Mount Tarawera was sliced open along its length as if hit with a huge cleaver (Source: Lonely Planet, New Zealand, 10th edition, October 2000). It is hard to imagine that these landscapes conveying serenity and peace were conceived in a hot and noisy magmatic chaos ! A superb capture, and very interesting narrative that goes with it .Thank you for sharing !

Thanks Tara! I like the convenience of having it. And it has a lot of applications (most of which I don't know) that allow you to post process your photo. I like the fact that a photo/video can instantly be texted or e-mailed. But it is no substitute for a real camera. If I manage to go on another real trip I will bring my Canon SLR, but I have to learn how to use it first haha!

Great story...the Maori version of Mt St Helens. As for your photo...this is a favorite scene of mine...love the atmosphere and mood.
