Description

Bill wondered how the dragonfly gets out of the larval case. This shot shows the hole in the back where the insect hauls itself out and then gradually expands into the adult. It can take three hours. Here is one from last year which shows the newly emerged insect next to the exuvia

Superb! What a treat to see in such detail! Like a horror movie prop presented with a plain background ready to animate and scare the hell out of us all.

I never knew these things existed until you posted them in your gallery. Retired but still teaching. So they are compressed inside the larval case? Sort of like a zip file.

LOL @ Mark! He's such a wit, I look forward to hearing whatever he has to say. :)

It's amazing how they can climb out and leave the old shell in such excellent condition.

Wow, my mind goes immediately to escape hatches, ejection seats and all that stuff. Nature is grand. Thanks for giving me both the before and after:-)

Looks like an emerging monster when seen this size. I've seen quite a few empty shells in my life. They've often given me the creeps. But it's amazing how things work in nature. Insects, with non-expanding exoskeletons need this manner of coming out and expanding to full adult size. Keep up the good work! :-)
