La forme du trou suggère que le projectile est ressorti... Excellente photo.
The shape of the hole suggests that the projectile came out ... Excellent shot.

A great 'shot' - must have killed him !!!

Fascinating piece. This poor cavalryman must have been shot in the back. Good protection against a sword or a pike, not so against a bullet.

I think it was a piece of shrapnel that came in from behind, judging by the size and shape of the hole. In that war the Prussians released new types of cannon. Probably he did not realize he was killed. Interesting capture, indeed.

From behind, I think so too.

A date with a Dreyse needle-gun or Krupp perhaps?

If this is the back of the cuirasse, the bullet came from in front. Either way, he probably died within a few seconds, all the major blood vessels to/from the heart being torn off.. But very painful seconds. The hole is far too smoothly round to be from shrapnel. Shrapnel is irregular and tumbles, wouldn't have enough energy to go all the way through. I think I saw this cuirasse on a visit to the Musée des Invalides in Paris back in 1968. I recall the dreadful impression it made on me. Keep up the good work! :-)

Excellent detail and lighting effects. The warrior certainly didn't have any joie de vivre remaining after being plugged through his cuirass, that's for darn sure.

Wow! Just one death in a very silly war.
