Description
While driving down from Portland to Bend a few weeks ago, we pulled over by the side of the road so I could take some photos of Mt. Washington. According to Wikipedia:
"Mount Washington is a deeply eroded shield volcano in the Cascade Range of Oregon. The mountain dates to the Late Pleistocene. However, it does have a line of basaltic andesite spatter cones on its northeast flank which are approximately 1,330 years old according to carbon dating. The main peak is a volcanic plug that was heavily eroded by glaciers in the last ice age."
What is a "shield volcano"?
"A shield volcano is a type of volcano usually built almost entirely of fluid lava flows. They are named for their low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. This is caused by the highly fluid lava they erupt which travels farther than lava erupted from stratovolcanoes. This results in the steady accumulation of broad sheets of lava, building up the shield volcano's distinctive form. The shape of shield volcanoes is due to the low viscosity of their mafic lava."

It's a lovely scene and photo. I would personally prefer it less 'processed' as I love to see the natural colours of nature, but that's just me! Great job and what a view!

What a sharp peak! And all the stripped bare tree trunks. Looks like it has had a blast and is ready for another. Thanks for the explanation. But I'd be rather apprehensive so close to it! Keep up the good work! :-)

An amazing peak ... a perfect representation of "mountain." Snow and sharp rocks and steep slopes. You got the perfect angle on this beauty!
