Description

Lake Tekapo is one of three lakes in the Northern Mackenzie Basin on the South Island. Its surface area is 32 sq mi (83 sq km), the surface elevation is 710 m (2330-ft) and the average depth is 69 m (276-ft). It is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, perfect for star gazing. The waters are turquoise colored from glacial action, but on this windy, rainy day with the clouds constantly changing and the surface of the lake churned up by the wind the water was grey and rough and dark.
