Description
For Project Earthbound.
Hus was trying to teach him something important, Arthur thought, though he had a hard time guessing what exactly as he watched the huge bear gobble up a pile of freshly caught fish, slurping each one whole, tail first like it was a strand of spaghetti. The burble of the creek was almost loud enough to muffle the sounds of Hus's bad table manners. The bear came to the last fish and stopped, looked at Arthur, and with what the teen would later swear was a mischievous twinkle in the eye, swatted the fish, smack! straight into Arthur's face, knocking off his glasses.
As Arthur regained his footing and reset his glasses on his nose, he looked down at the fish still wiggling and flopping on the ground. He had to admit that after three days of fasting, and despite being covered with dirt and bear spit, the fish looked pretty tasty.
He grabbed the wriggling trout, took out his knife and deftly severed the fish's spinal cord right behind the skull. A lot of people preferred bashing a fish's head, but Arthur had learned from his Grandpa that cutting the spine kept the fish from producing a variety of panic-induced toxins and thus made for better-tasting meat. Hus stuck his tongue out. Arthur could swear he was laughing.
"Thanks for dinner," he said to Hus. "But fair warning: If you start singing 'Bear Necessities,' I'm outta here."
