Description

The Domesday Book is on show for a short while at Lincoln Castle. One of the most iconic documents in British history is on display in Lincoln Castle's Magna Carta Vault in a rare appearance outside of London - part of the Battles & Dynasties exhibition. The Domesday Book is the greatest land survey of medieval Europe, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085 and completed in 1086. It shows a definitive record of who owned what in a kingdom that had been subject to a massive change in land ownership over the previous two decades since the 1066 invasion. The document is on loan from The National Archives in Kew and has not been on display away from there for more than 150 years. Therefore, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the iconic book in a different location. It will be on display in Lincoln Castle's Magna Carta Vault, alongside one of only four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta and one of only two surviving original copies of the 1217 Charter of the Forest. Its appearance is part of the Battles & Dynasties exhibition being held at The Collection. The exhibition also coincides with the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln - a key moment in English history that occured in and around Lincoln Castle itself - and the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Charter of the Forest. Nice pic, but I don't understand the name. What is so 'doomsday' about a map?
Your description and pic does make me want to visit there. 😄

Domes Day - taxation day! The book lay as a foundation for who gets taxed and who doesn't. Very possibly inspired by Roman census and taxation. SO much history here. As for the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest, these defined baronial privileges (if I remember my English history correctly). The Magna Carta curbed the power of the king in relation to the barons. The Forest Charter had with regulation of forest resources (you couldn't chop everything down and leave a desert). Nice photo of the castle entrance. Gives a good idea of how well this was fortified. Do you have any photo of these great documents? If so, please post! :-)
