This is a massively expressive work. (And it deserves 33 comments, not 3!!!) I never read the entries on Amaryllis in ancient poetry. (I know she's in Virgil's Eclogues, but I think she's in other poems too.) I know the flower's named after its country appearance. You painted it with strong rustic strokes, very flowing powerful strokes. Your deep pinks in the top petals are stunning; and they're striking contrast to the bright whites and lighter pinks. The stalks below are highlighted with thick, opaque yellows---like the blue outlining in the poppy stems I just commented on. You're getting more and more cosmic with each phase. There's a symmetry to the top flowers---pointing left and right. And then the lower flowers (still in the vase) are darker, a bit more transparent, and with beautiful detailing. They seem to rush there, like water. And the vase is pure painting---and it has a graphic feeling, almost like those patterns are in marble. This is gorgeous work, Carol.
The flowers on the ground are sumptuous, like eye candy; and then you have your background---which is a desaturated 'veil' of free petals, which surround the bouquet like they're celebrating it. They're like open hands...I've noticed you do this in various paintings, and it makes a very powerful backdrop. It also sets off the main bouquet beautifully. (And you have some faint oranges in there too, and some faint olive greens and yellows...)
A beautiful pulsing work, very painterly, and very generous with the bold hues, even though much of it is in subtle pinks and white, etc. Bold and sensitive at the same time. Really beautiful, Carol.
(You know, I"m aware that you link this gallery in your websites; and I hope that anyone who reads this knows that I'm responding from the center of my heart...there isn't a bit of 'pleasing' here: It's genuine, deep, deeply felt, and real. I'm responding to the great inner power of your art. I'm stunned by it!)

Just loved your comment, Mark. As always, I am inspired by your vision of my work. I did want this to be bold but in a subtle way. Once, a long time ago, I was given an amaryllis bulb growing in a glass vase. I was amazed at how strong and beautiful the flowers were blooming on a single thick stem. And how they would bloom with great gusto and then fade away, only to come back again, over and over. The flower also reminded me of tall pink lilies growing in my mother's garden when I was a child. They were called naked ladies and were as tall or taller than I was. I would spend endless time just staring up at them in awe. And the colors were so gorgeous and I think that's when I decided my favorite color was pink. That translated into pink bedroom, pink clothes, pink everything, and though my color palette has matured through the years, the naked lady pink still finds its way into paintings. And I know you don't say nice things just to please me, and that all of your words come from the center of your heart, and that what you say you truly feel. It is those feelings that you express so honestly and generously that inspire and give power to the act of creating. And for that inspiration there is no simple thank you.
