Description
January 11, 2005
Malmö City Theater and Opera House as seen from the Opera plaza. It was planned in 1931 and finally inaugurated in 1944 with Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream". It has one of Europe's largest scenes, a very big amphitheater form, very good all round acoustics and vision.Repertory – ballet, opera, operetta, pantomime, symphony orchestra, coral music, you name it!
There are 1,511 seats, there's place for a 60 person orchestra. The orchestra pit can be raised or lowered. The main scene is 25 meters by 25 meters with a floor area of 600 square meters. The scene opening is variable, 7 meters to 21 meters. A LOT of space to run around in! The rotateable part of the scene is 20 meters in diameter. The salon can be subdivided for more intimate performances, or made fully wide open for big performances.
If I can find an interior photo I will post it.
The lobby side has 2 floors with refreshment stands. When it's dark outside, one can see the sculptures on the 2nd floor. There is a large gold statue of "Thalia", the Greek muse of comedy, as a balance to the "Tragos" outside the building.
The sign reads "Chamber Concert". Too bad Rendo posts don't support sound.
Enjoy!

Opera is something I never cared a lot for, but I love the architectural styles. I agree with Mike

Great photo of the building, Michael. It would be a great way to spend an evening.
