Description

The late 30’s and into the 50’s found the building of the great banked oval tracks at Sitges-Terramar, Monza, Daytona then came Talladega, Ontario, Pocono. Aerodynamics was wandering over from the Autobahn and the Autostrada as well as the beaches and Bonneville. Then for me the wind tunnel was the source of the shapes and duct work. The dragstrip had founded slick tires of extremely sticky compounds. Here I show the way I found the 3g lateral and over one g axial state at the Circuit of the Americas. This was on a sample to exhibit what would be at the actual Grand Prix. We, three, my son, my grandson and I were there for the World Endurance Championship. Did it rain? Was the slick tire changed for a bit of tread then return for the finish? Of course! Coefficient of friction? Acceleration limited by the weight of the car holding tires in contact with the track? Nah!

back when I was involved with racy, the nascar type tires were easily a $1000.00 plus for 4 tires. many tracks required different compound tires to be competitive . the owners bought a Buddy Baker Buick that he raced in nascar races thinking they would get some of his secrets, but the Sportsman class Camaro was running faster than the Buick. I never heard how much they paid
