Description
This is a piece I did of my son several years ago. I entered it in one of my favorite band's(Motionless in White)album cover contest that I won.
There is a considerably long story around it, so I will give the shortened version. At the time of it's creation I suffered an immense loss of a child and found out I would no longer bear children shortly after. I gravitated to Motionless in White's song 'Black Damask' as an outlet for my suffering and grief. My amazing son, Valin, wanted to help with the shoot, and through his eyes I saw the suffering, hate, anger, and pain...He was feeling how I felt, and handling everything in his own way.The original of this work was simpler, less edited.
When I entered the original piece in to the contest I was at the brink of no longer doing photography. I had gotten so jaded, and to the point where I just wanted to sell off all of my equipment and move on(which coincidentally was when I left Renderosity). So I thought what the heck, one last hoorah. I never hoped on winning.
The contest closed and shortly after that I was contacted by the host of the contest. Things progressed so much from there, and the band wanted changes to the original. So, I edited him to their liking, which is a beautiful torn child that had been through so much in his young life(nearly quoting Chris Motionless!).From there I worked with WWE-NXT on creating work for them based around the album, as well as creating additional art for the band for the album and web usage.
I never imagined I would win, and there were plenty of other entries(I believe over 2000) that could have won. It has been a blessing to have won, and has helped light the fire under me to continue to do photography.
