Description

My state has recently starting allowing the breeding of red fox as pets. I fought this for 4 years but there is too much greed. These animals sell for $1000 up to $3000. People get them and then find out that a fox is not a pet. They are a wild animal. They have a strong skunk like order. They have teeth that can shred pretty much anything. They dig like a groundhog. Yes they are beautiful and loving animals. They are exceptionally intelligent. But they are not a pet. So when the animal becomes too much of a problem, the people dump them. They figure that since it is a "wild animal" it will be fine. No it will not be fine. After being raised in captivity they are handicapped as they did not learn what they need to be in the wild. This incredibly beautiful animal is a champagne colored red fox. She is not an albino. This color only comes from breeding silver and red fox together. This color is hard to obtain so they go for more money. I got a call one night 2 years ago when it was about 2 degrees outside. She had been coming to a porch to sleep on chair cushions as she desperately needed warmth. She was very underweight and had no real fear of people. I was able to catch her easily. She had been bought as a pet and dumped. I named her Quenton (that is another story). I was able to mix her with two wild red fox kits. It took the better part of a year and a half to get her to acting wild. I was fortunate to find a relatively safe place to release her. By then I had taught her to catch live prey, had to sacrifice mice, and had allowed her natural fear of people to surface. I know she is doing well as she is still occasionally spotted on the land. They people there never allow any kind of trapping or hunting. The state would have required me to destroy her if they had known about her. I find this to be incredibly evil. They never should have allowed a fox to be a legal pet.

She is beautiful - I'm glad that you were able to wild her, as opposed to tame her. When it comes to money, common sense goes down the tubes

I cried when I read your story and I was amazed to see the photo because it is a rare beauty of those in which the photographer is in tune with the animal and this is reflected in the look !! It seems that she is saying "thank you for saving me and see you soon" ..... I cried again ....

What a beautiful animal. She was incredibly fortunate to fall into your care. I agree with you wholeheartedly about "forcing" wild animals into domestication. Really stupid, but then again, I find too many people totally ignorant and uncaring when it comes to animals' (domestic and wild) needs and behaviors. It's no wonder our planet is becoming FUBAR.

As soon as I read your first line, I thought "Oh No". Makes me feel sad & very annoyed. We get it in the dog world with these so called "designer dogs" I think people think up a stupid name, like "jug, cockerpoo, jackshit etc & then look for the breeds. These are not wild animals thankfully but I hate the abuse of any animal. So glad she is safe & well. x

Wow! Incredible story - but that look in her eyes is so telling - distrust and hope mixed together. Beautiful photo.

B-wildered, then C-wildered and then D-wildered. Poor fox! I wonder when there will be a bounty on such stupid, selfish people. This fox is a real beauty, but not starving and conditioned as you found it! Thanks a LOT for the description and the beautiful photo. Keep up the good work! And, as for shredding, you should see what Kitty has done to the back of the easy chair in front of my balcony door! Sharpening her claws? Rather, velvet feels SO GOOD to put her claws into and PULL! It stretches her front leg muscles. I understand, and let her do it, but only on that chair. And she know it - when I come in she looks at me as if to say, it's still OK, isn't it? Keep up the excellent work, Bev! :-)
