Description

After deciding what images I wanted to feature in this new series, my first impulse was to name it "What's on my finger", lol. On 2nd thought I decided to use "Close encounters with some Dragonflies". At a later date, I will do other "Close Encounters" with some other critters and insects. Dragonflies and Damselflies have been around 300 million years. Most Dragonflies have eyes that touch in the middle and cover nearly the entire head. However, note the separated eyes in this Dragonfly species. This is rather unusual in Dragonfly species but is the normal arrangement in Damselflies. There are approx. 5,000 species world wide and around 450 in North America. I have photos of almost 30 of the 75 or so species that are found in my area. Dragonflies range in size from 3/4" to 5" in length. Grey Petaltails are around 3.0". That is in the upper range for my area. They make quite a loud wing noise as they fly. They often land on the side of tree trunks as they search for females. They are rather bold and will frequently land on a persons head or back. Thanks to all who have taken the time to comment on one of my postings. The feedback is appreciated. I hope everyone who has clicked on one of them was pleased with having done so. Lee

You keep posting these amazing photos of dragonflies sitting on your hand. I have never been able to get anywhere near that close to a dragonfly in my life. Are you sure you don't have these creatures under contract from some local talent agency? LOL

Another great capture!
