Description
When I grew up in Berlin in the 50's, I never noticed this, or didn't pay any attention to it. But after having moved away for ten, fifteen years and coming back on vacation, I became aware of how people in Berlin, waiting for their buses, interacted. The dynamics of the crowd, the old versus the young, the handicapped and older versus the younger and more vigorous, the apparent social standing, judged by their apparel etc. Many of these people take the bus daily, whether for commuting, shopping, or leisure, and many of them know each other, at least by sight, some of them are on speaking terms with others, still others are busy ignoring each other because of perceived social standings. As an outsider, one stands out, and one can feel these tensions and interactions within the group. This becomes especially apparent during rush hour, when there are a limited number of seats available, and there is a rush to get one of these seats. It reminded of the time after WW II when limited bus service was started again, and the crowd always acted as if it was the last bus. This behavior hasn't changed, even though buses run at 5 minute intervals of less.

Great shot and fascinating text. Group dynamics is an interesting phenomenon. I think it explains why some airline flights are relaxed and enjoyable, whereas others are tense and seemingly over-long, even though on the surface one would be hard put to explain why such a difference. Not quite the same as the hierarchical structure you're describing here, but related, I think, in regard to the interplay of personalities in any group.

Very interesting time study, Sig! The old clothes; even young women look like in their 50ies. Today elder women look like 30 in their fitting jeans and they act so. And all Germans here, no immigrant. Today half of the people are black or muslim members and in Berlin live people from 190 nations. I like modern days more; the memories such old picture can create are not only good...
