Description

Well here we are in the visitor center of Saratoga Battlefield National Park. The staff were extremely helpful; they started the introductory movie just for us and had plenty of time to shoot the breeze and answer questions. It was about this time that I realized we were not going to see the fortress because we were in the wrong ^%$# place, but this was still neat. It is a big park and the drive was superb with super duper weather. This is a diorama of some of the British forces behind a breast work and I was amazed at the scene. Usually it's the Merkins that hide behind stuff and snipe at the other guys, but these pointed-hatted Germans knew that trick as well. I recommend a FULL SIZE zoom on this. (C'mon guys! I managed to hold the camera still for this! Take a look.) These guys are part of the infamous German mercenaries we read about in history books. Of course these are just the grunts; the real mercenaries were the various princes, dukes, and bigwigs running the country back home. Gee. What fun for the poor schmucks on the front line. Especially with the left flank just starting to give way. Time to ausbuggen, meine Herren! Anyhow, time to go see the sites. There is quite a view out the window behind us... and what the heck is that??? Enjoy; thanks for viewing. Yeah, we got a little "Weesel glare on the glass"... I'm not trying to photo shop that.

great capture and narrative - funny how the history books never talk about the 'good' stuff

Good photo. I thought the "something" in the glass was part of the exhibit. Great job with the diorama - an awful lot of work went into it, plus the background. What I recall of the Hessians was a Christmas eve party where they all were quite drunk and got captured by Washington past mid-night. The guns, powder and ammo was a great capture and did a lot of help for the colonists side of the conflict. Got any more diorama photos? Would be nice to see them! Keep up the good work! :-)
