I was just reading about a Vermeer retrospective including others of the same genre where there was criticism that he "only painted what he was seeing." Microsoft's (WYSIWYG) What you see is what you get further played on this. I got comments like "Where is this located" on some of my prototype buildings as if SKETCHUP had geolocated every imaginative idea. This wonderfully portrays a place where Native Americans once walked across the lake instead of going around. The mood and response to this image needs no museum to place it critically into any previous genre.
