Oh, ho! Not just generically "...and the Daleks", but their introduction when the Doctor (Hartnell), Susan, Barbara and Ian landed on Skaro. There was something intrinsically :tragic" about those first Daleks that was lost when the series brought them back. originally, they were delusionally paranoid survivors of an atomic war (that was concluded in short order by a single "neutronic" weapon) who lived in fear they would be attacked again (the Thal ancestors were revealed to be the aggressors in that story). But so steadfast in their assumptions about the Thals that they could not accept the notion their descendants might be coming in peace. Thus they lashed out in their fear which tripped the domino effect for their destruction. I found myself wanting to pity that last surviving Dalek as it pleaded "Save us!" to which the Doctor replied, "Even if I wanted to...I can not." and then the creature confined within its shell 'wailed" as it died.
Alas, when they returned, any "nuance" they arguably had was lost as Terry Nation had turned them into conquering "robo Nazis from outer space" which became their modus operandi for the rest of the show's history.
