Description
From Wikipedia:
"Benham Falls are rapids of the Deschutes River located between Sunriver and Bend, Oregon, United States. With a pitch of 22.5°, they are rated Class 5 for watercraft, and are the largest falls on the upper Deschutes.
The falls were created by the eruption of nearby Lava Butte approximately 6,000 years ago, as the lava flow dammed the Deschutes, forming a lake known as Lake Benham. The river eventually flowed over the dam, draining the lake and thus forming Benham Falls."
There is an easy forested trail (with views of large piles of volcanic rock) that takes you there, though I ventured off the trail to a spot that those with vertigo or fear of heights might want to avoid to get this specific photo. We've visited here before, but only in summer, which I wouldn't recommend because of the large numbers of mosquitoes at that time of year...

I'm always careful next to the edge of anything, because my vision isn't good enough for that sort of precision exploring. I'll just sit back here and look at your beautiful picture, and thank you for having gone out there to get the shot. It's glorious!

Reading Tara, I'm reminded of her long-standing eye problem, and how she still makes beauteous photos with just one working eye. (Helle/helanker also has only one working eye, and her working one is faltering all the time now ((she's blind in one eye, from birth)). The art impulse overcomes everything...) This has your usual way with separated saturated hues, how they stand out for themselves. But it also has a 1st rate composition; not unexpected, given the dramatic wind of the river/falls; but you bring out the encroachment of the trees, I think from the way you treat them (or leave them be): they look like they're pressing up against the river, and protecting it. An encroached-upon shot, with that white crested water to break up the cloistered/protected feeling; and it's great that you incl the growth in front, as if it were a "frame" to the whole. One might expect the piece to end in crashing water, and I imagine a lot of photographers would do just that. But you included that front-growth, which frames the whole piece. And you cropped the top to cut off the sky (mostly), to where the piece is self-contained, almost crammed-in, which makes it feel like a world is going on in a very confined space. (Hardly confined, but your pov does bring that out.) This seems typical of how you handle long winding water shots. A fine piece of work.
