Kattegat - the name of the narrow strait between Sweden and Denmark. The name is originally Dutch, meaning cat passage, like a cat door in a house door, letting the cat in or out, but none else. It appears first in sea charts about 1700, and denotes at this point in time a narrow passage with considerable risks for sea farers. The Kattegatt on shore is a narrow street (gatt = street, usually narrow), as you have depicted so nicely in your post. In modern Scandinavian, gat has become gata (street). In English it has become "gate" (High gate being high street). Keep up the good work! :-)
