Lobotomy ( For Victorian Britain )

Wasn’t it just like pages
Torn from workhouse asylums
With every held down lobotomy scream
Over scraped painted scalpel metal tables
Sent back over cold stone pavements?
Wasn’t it all we could do
With our feet in the wallow
And our coaches turned to pumpkins?
Hushed away with desperate sighs
Amid blue flame fairies
Hovering at the edge of our pillows
While hope went off on holiday,
Packing up suitcases
For gathering dust in attics.
Wasn’t it just like a world
Where justice looked the other way
With imperialist notions
As a grand old lady herself stared out
From statues of class division democracy
And African diamond mines?
