A repost in honor of my grandmother's passing (years back)...
Just wanted to repost this: Impressions a child has when going through their grandmother's belongings...this grandmother came from Russia, and she had all kinds of things like this. I never knew what they were, but they were intense, glowing, and mysterious...
Done in Photoshop.

The magic of discovery.... We've been digging through a lot of stuff here lately.... Boxes we've had buried in closets for years. Amazing the treasures (or junk) one uncovers.
But these are beautiful images, Mark! Full of light and memories.

We forget in our youth and arrogance that these immigrants had lives before they became grandparents. And where we see a tiny old person dressed in plain clothing, inside still lives a wild child. These were people who left everything they had ever known, got on a boat and headed into the unknown with nothing more than faith that things would be better when they finally landed.
I had a Russian grandmother too and these images bring her back. She was fearless and funny and generous. Where most people would get upset if they got lost, she would just smile and say “We’ll have an adventure.”

My father's family too came from Russia, fleeing the pogroms. Very evocative images.

What a "pile" of wonderful stuff here. Wouldnt know what I like best. I think each of these have their own beauty. My ex-Mother in law, who I loved very much, came from Bulgaria and she had such beautiful bed sheets with a hole in the middle and beautiful aplications, instead of just bottons ot strings at the end of the duvet cover. Had never see such things before. WOnder what number three comes from. Could look like a camel-lobster, but what do I know :)

Surely beautiful made even more fascinating by the magnifying glass of the memory of a child!

It is cool your grandmother had intense, glowing, and mysterious things for you to explore. I like what you did with her purse (at least I think it's a purse). Your visuals take the object through many transformations and colors, as if seeing it through the eyes and imagination of a child. I never got to look at my grandmothers things, but I did enjoy looking through my mom's things. I remember her hats and how they thrilled me with their big flowers and her purses, with all the sparkles. Some of her treasures I still have and they bring back precious memories. Of course I let my daughter go through my things when she was a child. She especially liked looking through my jewelry and at the age of 6, lost a diamond from my first engagement ring. The stone had come out of the setting and she used to love looking at it. Then one day it fell out of her tiny hand onto a thick green shag carpet, and as hard as I looked, I could never find it. Most things that fell into that shag abyss were never seen again. So look at all the memories your grandmother's things stiffed in me.

I've seen this before of course, but it's still a fascinating look through the impressions we make as children. I remember everything in my grandmother's bedroom being a sort of rosy beige color, all satin and slippery, and smelling of face powder. She had such elegant things. You bring her back to me with these lovely memories of yours.
