Description
this highway transverses the Winding Stair Mountain range in Eastern Oklahoma to the west of Winding Stairs National Park/ Talimena Drive
I left home at 5AM yesterday and arrived home about 11 PM after 600 plus miles through Eastern Oklahoma and the Fort Smith, Arkansas area including the National Cemetery there. I have past Fort Smith numerous times on Interstate 40 without ever stopping. Fort Smith has so much history and not all good.
The Trail of Tears crossed the Arkansas River here on the Native Americans forced march from Florida to Oklahoma

This is a very beautiful area, filled with many colors, and beautiful hi-way to travel on.
Wow you have travelled a lot of roads and seen a lot of things in one day Richard.
This would have been a two day trip for us.
You must like driving and travelling -- unlike us with poor eye sight for the darkness of night and bright light as the sun comes up..
God Bless you for going and sharing here, thank-you Richard.

Beautiful capture, Richard. Looks like some nice color is happening there. This sounds like it's fairly close to where we were in October - I'll have to have a look in Google earth. I think we were there too early....

By itself, this is a breathtaking forest scene. What greater pleasure than to travel down a road with a seemingly endless expanse of green, orange and red on either side? (Well, as long as dangerous wild animals don't come out of hiding, that is!)
Didn't know about all the unhappy history of this road and neighboring places, though. Much rather I didn't know and could just feast my eyes on this spectacle of Nature. Our human presence so often has a way of spoiling everything...
