Description
It was here in the Bebelplatz in Berlin that one of the infamous Nazi book burning ceremonies was held on the evening of 10 May 1933. The Nazi burnings were a campaign conducted by the German Student Union (the "DSt") to ceremonially burn books in Nazi Germany and Austria in the 1930s. The books targeted for burning were those viewed as being subversive or as representing ideologies opposed to Nazism. These included books written by Jewish, pacifist, religious, classical liberal, anarchist, socialist, and communist authors, among others. The room in the floor here is to the right center as you walk in from Unter Den Linden. There is no obvious sign, but a large square on the ground where you can look into. It is a large white room with empty bookshelves – a tribute to the lost books.

One can not burn an idea. Sadly, same happened in Soviet Union but wasn't publicized as in Nazi countries. Voltaire had the right idea - we should cultivate our garden (last sentence in his book "Candide"). Sad images. But, oh, do many today be reminded! Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat its horrors.

And it amazes me that some people are still supporters of fascism's nonsensical ideas. Can't they see the damage that was done?

reminds me of Ray Bradbury's novel (and made into a movie) Fahrenheit 451; ( "Fahrenheit 451 – the temperature at which book paper catches fire, and burns...") and for the same reason, the books were considered subversive.
very dramatic photos
