Description
Archivist: “Now, Master Chomper, I understand from the Lady Auritu that a robot friend of yours is suffering from a damaged circuit or two - is that so?”
Chomper: “He thinks he’s Master of the Universe.”
Archivist: “A common delusion of many humans, though, luckily, few of them ever get the chance to command enough support to keep them safe from the psychologists.
A rare condition among robots, though; still, since they are formed ‘in our image’, so to speak, we should expect them to inherit some of our bad practices along with the good ones we attempt to instill in their personality chips.”
Chomper: So are we sure what caused him to change?”
Archivist: “Indeed, that is the important question, Master Chomper. But I am inclined to propose that it was the action not of the (so-called) Time Bomb, but of its activator. Your friend must have been in its vicinity when it was being used unnecessarily: that is to say in the absence of the ‘Bomb’ itself. It is known to have a disruptive effect on some electronic devices - in extreme cases making them totally useless - and would naurally affect a chip or a motherboard in any machine built with, and reliant upon, such parts.”
Chomper: “So what can we do?”
Archivist: “I have here a slightly larger version of the activator, which was specifically designed to repair the damage caused by an untargeted activator (its normal target being the ‘Bomb’, in the absence of which object it would search for some similar target).
It has worked on all the devices tested here - but they are all inanimate objects, and certainly not ones aspiring to have personalities such as you and your friends have.”
Chomper: “In other words, it might not work.”
Archivist: “Exactly.”
Chomper: We go along, point it at him, press that button and hope that it will restore our Klank to his old self and not blow our minds at the same time. eh.”
“Archivist: “This version will affect what it is pointed at, not the operator nor any other device behind the holder.”
Chomper: “Well, Moggie, what do you think?”
Mogbot: “It’s worth a try; can’t make him worse, surely? And Kargaz said this gentleman here was the wisest person on this planet and we could trust him.”
Chomper: “OK, then. We take this activator and hope for the best.”
Auritu: “You trust your Kargaz, do you, Chomper?”
Chomper: “Oh yes, miss; him and our mister James.”
Auritu: “Indeed. Archivist -“
Archivist: “Madam?”
Auritu: “This activator will need to be returned here?”
Archivist: “It will indeed. It is set for one use and one only, and then put somewhere very safe - in my care, for example.”
Auritu: ‘Very well. Chomper - when you have finished with the activator give it to Kargaz and tell him to return it to us. I wish to know the results; he might care to report them to me personally when he arrives with it.”
Archivist: “Impress upon him that it is to be returned locked in a special container - which I will get for you now - and given to me, or to the Lady Auritu, unopened.”
(Archivist fetches box, places the special activator in it and hands it to Chomper.)
Auritu: “Off you go, then, you two.
Collect Kargaz from the kitchen where, no doubt, he has been attempting to charm all the maids and return to help your friend.”
