Description

Yup, another PA unit. Must have been some quarrelsome people living here back then. So, taking T. Rex's comment about other states' participating (and there were plenty) I wonder how we should classify the artillery unit near Culp's Hill which spoke mostly German. Then we had Irish units on both sides: Union and Confederate. And more than a few Canadians joined up to support the Union abolitionist movement. Getting crowded out here, folks. Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

I don't think that horse is in too good a shape - it's got something coming out of its guts. Great shot

Highly unusual statue, considering the different colors/materials. And as for people from far away, there were draft riots in New York City when draft officers tried to enlist newly arrived immigrants. This gives a glimps of the composition of units. Germans were well disciplined and very good with artillery and were highly desired in artillery units. As for Irish, I could imagine the 2 different Irish groups siding with the north resp. the south. I can see the linguistic confusion with an Irish officer trying to give orders to a German artillery man. Yet, things seemed to work out! Keep up the good work! :-)
