Description
The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany), starting on 13 August 1961, the Wall cut off (by land) West Berlin from virtually all of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and finished in 1992. Sections such as in the above photo still stand to this day. It has been an amazing thing to see with my own eyes.....I never thought I would.

It took longer for teachers' unions in GB to act together than it did for the wall to fall.

Wonderful historical comparison photos and commentary. Walls are much better at keeping people in than keeping people out.

Great capture Andrew. I am from Berlin but I left in 1960. By the time the wall was built I lived in Toronto, Canada and was totally unaware of its construction. I used to ride my bike from Tegel, in the French sector through East Berlin to just past what became known as Checkpoint Charlie. I worked on Friedrichstrasse between U-Bahnhof Kochstrasse and Hallisches Tor. In 1988 I stood next to the Reichstag and looked at the crosses along the Spree for the people that got killed trying to cross the wall. A year later the wall came down. My friends in Berlin never thought they would see that day in their lifetime.
