Description

Arivaca lies 21 miles west of Tubac. Tubac is located about 4 miles north of Tumacacori on Interstate 19 between Tucson and Nogales. From Tubac west, all the way into the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Gunnery Range toward Yuma, a distance of about 150 to 200 miles, is empty land and it is the primary area through the desert were smugglers and illegals are coming north into Arizona and points beyond. About 13-14 years ago, when we were working in the Arivaca area, we were driving east on the winding road between Arivaca and Tubac when a bunch of cars were coming west. Just as we were going around a turn, the last car in that group, a step van, had stopped and discharged about twenty illegals, men and women, They were so fast exiting the truck and disappearing into the desert, Special Forces couldn't have done a better job. Smugglers are so sophisticated, they stake out observation posts on some of the mountains in the desert, with supplies for a week or two, and stay in touch with the actual smugglers by two-way radio to let the smuggles know where the Border Patrol is. The Border Patrol is using trucks, horses and helicopters to try to catch the bad guys.
