Description

For Harry's 90th Birthday (goodoleboy).
* * *
Ok. First: I used that drawing in no. 2 as a bow to Harry's long career as a technical illustrator. (It's my drawing from The Book of Kells.) Harry worked for years doing technical drawing for clients like Boeing Aircraft. I'm sure Harry wouldn't like to be called a 'monk': But that kind of work takes hours, and, considering it's done to build aircraft, it's very exacting. It's very solitary, very consuming, and he did it all by hand: Ie, with Technical Pens, T-Squares, French Curves, Compasses, etc. (Even "Parallel Gliders Rolling Rulers" and a host of other things I'd never even heard of---and I came up doing technical work!) He posted some of his airbrush work, and it's meticulous and beautiful. And that's just some of what he did... Next: Harry just ended months of countless medical crises: spinal problems, eye problems, gastro-intestinal problems, several other problems...with exams and exams, weeks of little rest, and pain that made it impossible to walk many days. Hell, I just had a medical problem this weekend (spent part of the 31st in a hospital), and I'm exhausted! Harry went through this stuff for months---to where he wondered if he'd even 'make' it to this birthday. So this dedi is for overcoming as well as for his art! As a veteran of WWII, I'm sure Harry learned about overcoming in ways he can't ever describe: His 90th is a tribute to that. So I bow to it as well. But he's back now photographing that strange, vast, beautiful and unique place---Los Angeles---where even the drought and fires haven't stopped him: I've always loved his minimalist shots---twigs on concrete, discarded shoes, railway tracks at dawn, elongated shadows...or his exquisite rose series (along with orchids and others): In fact, Harry has one of the most beautiful flower catalogs on RR. And, oddly enough, I discovered him through his car photography---on recommendation from Odie, who sent me to his gallery. I fell in love with his cars, new, old and decayed...From beautiful to discarded, and lush to decayed and everything in between, nothing seems to have stopped or escaped him; and I'm so grateful he's doing it again, and I hope he continues a long, long time...
Harry:
I wish you a wonderful 90th, with joy that you're better, honor for your service in war, and your years of dedication and exploration as an artist; for your comments here on RR---which are some of the most articulate and caring I've seen---and for always being a kind and very supportive friend as well as being strong in the face of adversity. (Helle said you have to have real strength to get through what you've been through...) With love, happiness and tons of wishes for years to come; and above all, with gratitude for all you've done: Happy 90th, friend, and may inspiration be with you always!
Mark (Harry's birthday was the 30th: I'm a bit late!) ------------------

OMG, yoiks and away! Never in the history of birthday dedications has there ever been such an artistic, explicit, complimentary, colorful, factual, heartfelt and distinct paean of tribute allotted to one person. Super artwork, Mark, done in your own inimitable style and fully appreciated. You listed only a few of my countless ailments, but what the heck, you still have a great memory in remembering my life history. In any event, after long periods of doubt as to my very existence I finally hit the big Nine Oh. Thank you so very much for this fantastic compendium of mind blowing art and text, my friend. All this while you yourself were experiencing physical pain, plus watching over your hospital ridden sister. Anyway, I am feeling much better now after the many months of multi doctor appointments, tests and hospital stays because of my physical problems. Happiness is the absence of pain. Getting old is not for sissies. I sure hope 2018 treats me much better than the last year.

A fabulous birthday present for Harry and he is overjoyed with it too, I can tell from his text here. Getting to 90 is a great achievement when he has been so sick. I hope you make the century Harry. I love how you have created all the flowing colors here with the lovely vibrant feel. It also shows how Harry's life has ebbed and flowed over the years. A superb image and I hope you can stay out of hospital for 2018 and stay healthy. 😃

So Harry beat the Reaper? Its always nice to hear that someone gave Death the finger and got away with it. This is a fantastic triptych to celebrate Harry's nine decades and, more importantly, being around to see it. Happy belated, Harry. Next stop, 100.

Wow. Just wow. I'm in awe of both your art and writing, and the accomplishments of the amazing man you've made this wonderful dedication for. I must be living under a rock - I don't know how I've missed his gallery, but that will be fixed in just over 3 0r 4 seconds... You both have my utmost respect and admiration.

I would be remiss if I didn't say "Thanks" to Harry for his service.

I love what you did with your "Kells" drawing. That blows me away. This is a great progression from blues, adding magentas, and finally coming up with this end panel. The whole series is fantastic (both meanings), and absolutely gorgeous. An epic creation, beautifully done!
